I love texture whether I’m painting in encaustic wax or working in clay . I like art that wants to be touched . Touched by fire , by colour , by imagination  no minimalism here please . My short attention span and flexible nature means that I often flit between paintings, forming ceramic vessels and sculpture in the same day.

My paintings are abstract and loosely represent gardens, vegetation ,wild weather, water and natural elements. I choose to  work with encaustic wax as it is fluid and how it creates dynamic and luminous surfaces. I start by painting layers then gouging through then to reveal what’s underneath. I work the wax to form colours ,shapes and gestures  to form complex textural paintings.

When I turn to working with clay I am always looking to experiment .Starting with my vessels I both throw and hand build , then use coloured special effect glazes and slips to produce cracks , craters , globs or whatever tickles my fancy on the day . Fire often comes into my work using alternative firing techniques like Raku or pit firing.

Lastly due to popular request I sculpt animals sometimes human but not usually. My animals often think themselves as human lying on the couch , reading in bed and eating at the table . I find my inspiration from children’s stories, fantastical characters and surreal scenes.

I exhibits locally in the Mahurangi , Matakana area and can be contacted through my  website www.carolinejaneart.com  Facebook and Instagram Caroline Jane Art
